Tax Levy

The total amount a taxing authority needs to raise — which, divided by total value, sets the rate.

A tax levy is the total dollar amount a jurisdiction (school district, city, county) decides it must collect in a year. That levy, divided by the total assessed value of all property in the area, produces the tax rate or millage.

This is why appeals matter even when rates seem fixed: your bill is your assessed value multiplied by the rate. You can’t change the levy, but you can challenge your share of it by correcting your assessment.
