Tax Assessor

The local official responsible for determining the value of property for tax purposes.

The tax assessor is the government official — elected or appointed — who determines the assessed value of every property in a jurisdiction. They set values; they don’t set tax rates or collect the tax.

Understanding this split matters: you appeal your value to the assessor’s office or review board, not the tax collector. The assessor’s office is also where you find your property record and the forms you need.
