Homestead Exemption

A tax break that reduces the taxable value of your primary residence.

A homestead exemption lowers the taxable value of your main home, reducing your bill — and in many states it also caps how fast your assessment can rise each year.

Up to 30% of new homeowners never file for it, leaving money on the table annually. It’s separate from an appeal: you can claim the exemption and appeal an over-assessment in the same year.
